Location

The city of Newport Beach lies along the Pacific Ocean on the coast of California in Orange County; 50 miles (80 km) south of Los Angeles, 85 miles (136 km) north of San Diego, 14 miles (22 km) west of Disneyland/Anaheim, 14 miles (22 km) south of Long Beach and adjacent to John Wayne/Orange County Airport. Elevation ranges from sea level to 691.3 feet (210.7 meters).

Size/Population

Total area is 35.97 square miles (23,024.33 acres) and land area is 13.97 square miles (8,944.33 acres). The city encompasses 22 square miles (14,080 acres) of water area. There are several different villages that make up Newport Beach such as Balboa Island, the Balboa Peninsula, Cannery Village, Corona Del Mar, Mariner's Mile, Fashion Island, Lido Marina Village, Back Bay Reserve and Newport Center.

Transportation

Newport Beach is an approximate one-hour drive from downtown Los Angeles. The John Wayne/Orange County Airport serves as the hub of Newport Beach and other communities within Orange County, with convenient access to hotels, conference, conference centers and visitor attractions. Providing more than 280 flights per day, John Wayne Airport offers non-stop flights to destinations such as Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Ft Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Newark, Oakland, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Reno, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, San Joes, Seattle and St. Louis.
The John Wayne Airport is currently served by Alaska Airlines, Aloha Airlines, American Airlines, America West, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, TWA, United Airlines and USA Airways.

Climate

Orange County benefits from ocean breezes to keep its weather milder than the inland regions to the north and east. The summer daytime temperature averages barely 80, and only dips to the mid-60s in winter. Evening temperatures seldom fall below 50 degrees year-round. About ten inches of winter rain falls yearly. Morning fog and low clouds are common in the cooler seasons, but the sun shines dawn to dusk 90% of the time in summer.

Beach Curfew: 10 p.m.

Driving: Driver and all passengers must wear seat belts at all times. Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol is a serious offense; driver is considered legally drunk if his/her blood alcohol level is 0.08%

Liquor: Legal drinking age in California is 21 (picture id may be requested at any time). Bars are open until 2 a.m. Liquor stores are open seven days a week. California State Law prohibits the sale of alcohol from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. from any location. No liquor is allowed on beaches.

Smoking: Legal smoking age in California is 18. Smoking is not permitted in bars, restaurants or any other public building in California.
