Newport Beach rules

Swimming Woman swimming in ocean

Swimming is fun and relaxing, but knowing the Pacific Ocean and the California coast is important! Newport Beach has strong rip currents and sand bars, making swimming dangerous if you’re not prepared. Ocean safety is extremely important. Key safety rules include knowing how to swim, never swimming alone, and avoiding the water if you’re uncomfortable. Newport Beach lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 am- 6:00 pm, so swimming is generally limited to those hours.

Surfing

Surfers will want to take note of Newport Beach’s regulations. Newport Beach surfers must be aware of proper etiquette in the lineup and safety rules. Surfers should learn local peak identification, rip current navigation, and local swell conditions before entering the lineup. Overall, surfing safety is about knowing the water conditions and surfing at your comfort level.

Alcohol

Alcohol is not permitted on the beach at any time. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy an alcoholic beverage before or after heading to the beach. For some of the best options, review the best Newport Beach restaurants!

Dogs Dog on beach

Looking to bring your furry friend to the beach with you? You can; just be sure to follow these rules. First and foremost, dogs are not allowed on the beach between 10 am and 4:30 pm during all times of the year. Dogs are permitted on the beach either before or after these hours. Dogs are also required to be on a leash at all times. Dog owners need to be in control of their pets at all times. Also, be sure to carry pet waste removal bags and keep the beach clean!

Fire Rings

Fire rings are located in Newport Beach, and two types can be used. Green fire rings are used for cooking only. Charcoal can be purchased for these rings nearby at several locations. Unpainted fire rings are designed to burn wood. These rings are typically used for warmth during cooler nights on the beach.
