The Top Newport Beach Surfing Spots

The Wedge

You can’t talk about surfing in Newport Beach without mentioning The Wedge. This famous stretch of beach on the northernmost point of the Balboa Peninsula is home to some serious surf. This wave rider mecca frequently cranks out 30-foot waves that are perfect for experienced boardriders. This is not a place to test your surfing skills. If you are a beginner or unsure if you can conquer this level of surfing, sit it out and try another spot further down the beach.

Tip: From May 1st to October 31st, a Blackball Flag signals that there is no board usage allowed between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (body surfing only).

Newport Beach Pier

The area north of the Newport Beach Pier near Blackie’s By the Sea is home to solid waves for beginners and longboarders. The surf here is steady and even with plenty of room, so you don’t have to worry about large crowds obstructing your run. Plus, it’s a convenient location for basing a day at the beach.

54th Street and 56th Street Jetties

This series of jetties is a popular place for Newport Beach surfing. A couple of these areas offer mid-size swells with lefts and rights, so you don’t get tired constantly going left like most of the surf spots in Orange County. You’ll need to head up to the northern end of Newport Beach to access this area near West Newport Park. There’s not a ton of parking here, so be on the lookout for any street spots you can find.

Surf Rentals and Lessons

Newport Beach is home to plenty of surf shops that have rental boards, wetsuits, boardshorts, and other beach gear. There are also surf schools that will help beginners learn while also helping experienced wave riders hone their craft.
