Driving From San Diego to Newport Beach
The trek from San Diego to Newport Beach is only about an hour and twenty minutes (from downtown San Diego), but that doesn’t mean it won’t still take you another 30 to 40 minutes if you leave during rush hour. While most residents know this, visitors flying into San Diego International Airport and driving to Newport Beach can expect a heavy dose of traffic throughout the day, especially on major highways.
I-5 is the primary highway that you will drive on from San Diego to Newport Beach. If you want to make the most of your drive, take a detour on the Pacific Coast Highway from Dana Point up through Laguna Beach. The views are fantastic, and it only adds about 20 to 30 minutes to your journey.
